Posh Paper Mache BIG Bee!

The humble bumble bee can be found buzzing around our gardens in the summer. These furry insects are harmless familiar inhabitants of our outdoor environment. If you love a bee or know someone else who does, you might like to try making this BIG bee created from one of my original designs.

The video below will show you how I created my bee so that you can try making it a home! You can draw out your own bee template or you can buy my own original design downloadable bee body and wing templates as a one off purchase from the shop if you want to try making it at home. You will be able to print my template on any ordinary printer to use again and again. The templates are superimposed on a grid to allow you to scale up or down the design as you wish. This project is aimed at adults or teenagers and may not be suitable for younger children. You can use my Posh Paper Mache recipe or everyday paper mache recipe with this project.

While you are here, just a reminder to join my mailing list to be sure that you know when I have added new designs for you to make as well as upcoming events, and don’t forget, I have my gallery space at my home open by appointment or when the “OPEN” signs are out if you would like to come to meet me in person and browse!

If you want to use my own template designs you will need to download both the body and the wing templates using the links below (You can see cropped preview images of how the downloads look below).

Materials List - You Will Need:

This bee is designed to hang on the wall by attaching a D-ring to the back, but it could just as easily lie on a flat surface if you wish.

I make my templates from recycled wooden board and cut them out using a scroll saw or jigsaw. If you don't have access to these you can cut your templates from stiff carboard or corrugated card using scissors or a craft knife which will achieve a very similar result (although not as strong).

To do it yourself at home you will need:

  • Household printer

  • Stiff carboard or corrugated card

  • Pencil or Sharpie

  • Sharp scizzors or a craft knife

  • Newspapers and magazines

  • Hot or cold glue gun plus glue sticks

  • Cheap plastic bowls and a butter knife

  • Stick blender or food mixer

  • Sieve or strainer

  • Paper mache mix (see recipies on my Blog)

  • Sandpaper or thick white paint

  • Water and PVA glue

  • Acrylic paint and brushes

  • Cement or flour and a dust mask (optional)

  • Yacht varnish and a D-ring (optional)
