Posh Paper Mache Daymark With Seagull

The Daymark on the island of St Martin’s, which is part of the enchanting archipelago of the Isles of Scilly, is a dominant coastal landmark with a rich maritime history. Standing proud on the island’s western end, this tall, red and white striped tower is impossible to miss, even on the gloomiest of days.

Built in 1683, the Daymark served as a vital navigational aid for sailors braving the often-treacherous waters surrounding the Isles of Scilly. Unlike a lighthouse, it does not emit light; instead, its function was purely visual. Mariners used it as a daytime reference point to help guide their vessels safely through the archipelago’s rocky channels.

The structure itself is quite simple yet elegant, with a cylindrical shape that narrows to a point towards the top. You can walk directly up to the Daymark through a windswept landscape of purple heather and bouncy turf where you will find it towering above you. Its bright red and white paint resembles a pepper pot and ensures that it stands out against the rugged landscape and the often-grey skies of the southwest. Still, after its 300+ years of service, the Daymark remains a striking feature, a reminder of the islanders’ long-standing relationship with the sea.

In contemporary times, while modern technology has taken the helm when it comes to navigation, the Daymark remains a beloved icon and popular spot for visitors. Walking to find it is a moderate challenge being that it is at the far end of the island, but the effort will reward you with spectacular views of the sea and nearby islands, making it a perfect highlight on any exploration of St Martin’s.

Posh Paper Mache Daymark

The Daymarks offers a compelling subject for recreating in Posh Paper Mache, with its minimal yet striking form. It’s jolly red and white stripes are attractive to anyone who loves bright colour…and why not amplify its connection with the sea and add a little narrative by popping a “Scilly” seagull on the top!?
